Show news short 'n sweet...

The Internet has come into its own whether it be in times of crisis such as the spring floods or foot and mouth crisis or just the everyday cut and thrust of agility life. The Net is a fast and efficient way of keeping people informed about the little changes as well as the big ones. We can't be everywhere at once and so we rely on your input (and goodwill) to keep Agilitynet up to date so email us your show news as and when...

Please remind your show secretary to keep sending those updates to us and to include the name of the show, date(s), venue and other relevant details.

 JANUARY 2009

All About Dogs Show to End

The organisers of All About Dogs show are extremely sad and disappointed to announce that the event will no longer be staged.

Although the 2009 event had been planned to go ahead at the Brentwood Centre showground, after a series of meetings with the local borough council it has been decided that it will no longer be viable, due to changes in Council policies of competitive tendering for events staged in Brentwood.

The All About Dogs show has always been about promoting dog ownership in the very best light, and was organised by 'doggie people for doggie people.' All About Dogs was the largest and most comprehensive outdoor dog event of its kind – it was the blue print for others to follow.

The organisers feel that should they become involved in competitive tendering for the event, changes in the format of the show would have to be  implemented and costs for all concerned would rise dramatically. The event has always been staged with dogs in mind and not profit margins. Other venues, both within Brentwood and outside the Borough have been viewed and considered, but the financial implications of moving the event elsewhere were quite prohibitive and would not be viable in the current financial climate.

The organisers would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thanks all the agility people who have supported the event over the past ten years.

iSS Announce New Show Hotline

iSS have set up a Show Hotline number which is available for free to everyone. Add this number  07532 11 11 57 to your mobile contacts list.

Kate Austin said, 'Because of the number of show cancellations that have happened recently, we have set up this service as an aid to everyone. It’s a non-profit making service, and we hope it will be the only number you’ll ever need!'

Competitors: When you see the Hotline number on a show's paperwork you know they will be using this service. Add the Hotline number to your mobile contact list so you can check on a Show’s status at any time. Standard mobile rates apply. This is not a premium number.

Show Secretaries: The Hotline is available to all shows - free of charge -to post urgent show information. Simply email your message to hotline@ishowservices.com or text your message to the hotline number and it will be recorded as an announcement which all competitors can access via the Hotline number, at standard mobile rates.

The Hotline will be restricted to messages regarding show cancellation, change of venue or similar urgent information for shows occurring within the following seven days only. 'Camping Full' messages can be recorded at any time. Full instructions and Terms and Conditions can be seen on the iSS website, and the logo can be downloaded from there. Use it on your schedule and/or posted paperwork to let your competitors know you are using this free service and save yourself lots of phone calls. Now you can reach all your competitors, even if you are already on site.  (03/01/09)

The wording is meant to act a guide for show secretaries and their printers. All Open/Limited and Championship schedules must be compiled in accordance with the layout indicated. The Rules and Regulations must be included as indicated. Anyone involved in show management is advised to check the updated versions on Kennel Club website and make the necessary amendments.

The KC International Agility Festival Moves Home

Kelmarsh Hall Front ViewThe Kennel Club can today announce that its International Agility Festival has found a new base at Kelmarsh Hall, Kelmarsh, Northampton in order to accommodate the ever growing number of competitors and visitors who attend.

The Kennel Club International Agility Festival is one of the world's largest and most popular dog agility events attracting thousands of competitors from across the world. The 2009 International Agility Festival will be held on 14-16 August 2009 and hopes to beat last year's record attendance of 2,500 dogs competing, with the total number of entries increasing by 40% on 2007.

The new venue, Kelmarsh Hall, is a graceful 18th century historic house, set in beautiful gardens and surrounded by its own working estate in the rolling Northamptonshire and Leicestershire countryside. Easily accessible from all parts of the country, Kelmarsh is just five miles south of Market Harborough and 11 miles north of Northampton on the Leicestershire/Northamptonshire border. Despite its rural location Kelmarsh Hall is easily accessible; being located less than a mile from Junction 2 of the A14 and only 15 miles from the M1, Junction 19. It is situated on the A508 between Market Harborough and Northampton.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club spokesperson commented, 'We are delighted that the International Agility Festival is moving to the wonderful grounds at Kelmarsh Hall. The Festival has been growing at such a rapid rate that it was important that we found the right venue to see the Festival continue to develop as the world’s best dog agility event. The ideal location means that the Festival will be accessible to all UK competitors and is convenient for competitors travelling from Europe and beyond. It is hoped that the Festival will remain there for many years to come.'

Schedules for the 2009 Festival will be available at Crufts and from the Kennel Club website from that time www.kcagility.org.uk.

The schedule will be very similar to 2008 with graded classes for all heights and grades of dogs, but all the Cup qualifying classes will be held on Friday, 14 August 2009.

Further information can be obtained from Debbie Deuchar, Show Secretary, The Kennel Club, 1- 5 Clarges Street, Piccadilly, London, W1J 8AB.

Crufts 2009 Goes On Without the BBC

Today the Kennel Club confirmed that it and the BBC will be unable to continue working together in 2009 for the broadcast of the world’s greatest celebration of dogs, Crufts, which in previous years has attracted over 14 million viewers in the UK and additional audiences worldwide. This position was reached after the Kennel Club regrettably had to refuse to comply with the unreasonable demands insisted on by the BBC, to exclude certain breeds of dog from the group competition at the show. These demands took no account of the measures the Kennel Club has in place to improve the health of pedigree dogs, or of the fact that judges will be trained to help ensure that all dogs being awarded prizes at Crufts will be healthy representatives of their breed.

More than ever, Crufts 2009 will set the standard for all future Kennel Club licensed dog shows and the Kennel Club will be running a comprehensive education programme for judges to ensure that only the healthiest dogs are rewarded in the show ring at Crufts 2009 and beyond.

Ronnie Irving, Kennel Club Chairman, said

'I am very sorry that BBC audiences around the world will not be able to join us in celebrating all dogs in 2009 and to see the remarkable diversity of dogs and activities on show at Crufts; ranging from the show classes to agility displays, the Friends for Life competition and the unsung heroes who take part in breed rescue.

'However, we have been forced to reject the insupportable conditions imposed by the BBC, who have told us they will only televise the show in 2009 if certain breeds are excluded from participating. We are unable to agree to these demands, as it would compromise both contractual obligations and our general responsibility to dog exhibitors and our audience and we believe it would be inappropriate and counterproductive to exclude any recognised breed from Crufts.

'We are obviously disappointed and confused with this outcome as we hoped the broadcast would have supported our focus on health and welfare issues, given advice about caring for and training dogs and showcased the charitable work that we support. This TV exposure would have benefited all dogs and given viewers a well-rounded picture of what the new Crufts in 2009 is all about.'

In October 2008 the Kennel Club announced a clear strategy to show how it is further focusing its activities on the health and welfare of all dogs. It announced mandatory compliance with its strict code of ethics for all breed clubs registered with the Kennel Club.

Earlier this month, it completed its review for each of the 209 pedigree dog breeds in the UK and announced revised standards that will have far-reaching benefits for the health and welfare of dogs. These new breed standards and health plans will benefit from the extensive research that has been funded by the Kennel Club in conjunction with renowned veterinary research centres over a number of years. The overall aim is that all pedigree dogs should be fit for function and that breeders and judges should not reward dogs with obvious conditions or exaggerations, which would be detrimental in any way to their health.

Ronnie Irving added,

'Crufts is the world’s best platform to talk to dog owners about how we can work together to ensure their dogs’ health and well being and veterinary and scientific experts will be on hand to explain how research has developed over the last 10 years which can help us to resolve genetic issues generally.

'Dogs and their owners world wide, look forward to Crufts every year and I can promise all dog lovers, anywhere in the world, that the show will go on. I ask all those that care about dogs and animal welfare to support us and to flock to the show to make it the biggest and best ever.

'Crufts 2009 in particular, will focus on thanking the unsung heroes of the dog world, such as breed rescue volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure that unwanted and abandoned dogs find a good home.'

Redgates Show Date Finalised

The  2009 Redgates AC Agility Show will be held on Saturday, 8 August 2009. It show will take the same format as last year - being Independent but aligned to Kennel Club Rules. Due to space limitations, it has to be Limited although they are exploring the option of a fourth competition ring.

There will definitely be graded and combined Agility & Jumping Classes for Large Grades 1-3 dogsbut the organisers are still considering what to do with classes for Small and Medium Dogs and for the higher graded Large Dogs. The number of entries that they received for some of last years classes was such that it is not economically viable to have the same breakdown of classes again, but there will definitely be four classes available for all these dogs.

In addition to the usual classes, there will be an Any Size Jumping Class for dogs that for whatever reason are not able to compete at their normal allocated height. There will also be two 'fun type' classes. One will definitely be Brace Pairs - one handler running two dogs of the same height category consecutively around the same course. A helper to hold the other dog will be allowed.'

Tim said, 'We would also like your views on the other Fun Class. Would you like the Pause Box Challenge again?  Or would you like something else? Whatever we end up with, we want it to be something different from the normal Helter Skelter type fun classes, and something that will again put a smile on to everyone's face. Please send us your ideas - however outlandish they are. Perhaps those of you that remember the Fun Classes run by Tony Veal in the early days of Agility could suggest something.'

People will be delighted to hear that the same luxury toilets - the ones carpets and running water - have been booked again as have the same caterers. There will be the same standard or rosettes and trophies as last year, too.

If you or anyone you know would like a Trade Stand at the Redgates show or would like to sponsor any classes - please email HappyDogs@RedgatesAgility..co.uk or ring tel. 01799 527697. Web site: www.RedgatesAgility.co.uk

Tim Said, 'We want the Redgates Show to remain small, friendly and relaxed, and to reflect the Redgates philosophy that Agility should be Fun. We look forward to seeing you all next year.'

Christmas at Delinquent Dogz

Michelle and  Eileen Ainsworth have given this a lot of thought to their Christmas Show on 7 December and offer the following Christmas Gamble and Helter Skelter in the spirit of fun, in addition to the point accruing Agility and Jumping classes.

The running order of show which opens at 8.30am will be Golden Oldies/Capability Agility (Level One Agility and Level Two/Three Agility) and then the Pay on the Day Christmas Gamble which will be a simple course based around the A-frame, jumps and rigid tunnels only.

The object of the game is to get as many points as possible within your allotted time. If you fault in any way on the course, you are eliminated. Points will be five for the A-frame, two for tunnel and one for each jump. You must do each obstacle at least once and may not just keep repeating the A=frame. In other words, you must do the A frame, then another obstacle before you do the A-frame again. There will be one run per dog @ £1.50 per run. Prizes will go to top five dogs.

All agility classes are to be judged by Chelle with spot prizes available for dog/handler in fancy dress, too - and anything else which amuses her/others. Be warned!

Then Mike Brooks will be there to judge the Jumping classes including Golden Oldies/Capability Jumping (Level One Jumping Level Two/Three Jumping) followed by the Helter Skelter with a 'twist.' Rosettes and Medals will go to top three in Golden Oldies/Capability in Level One and Level Two/Three.

For those of you who attended October Delinquent Dogz show before, the fabulous Simon - or should that be Delores - Vann is once again doing the catering, this time with a Christmas theme. In addition, there will be a Grand Christmas Raffle with no piffle prizes, all really nice stuff. Tickets will cost £2 per strip with all the  proceeds towards the Guide Dog fund. There will also be the usual tombola and book stall, too.

Chelle said, 'In 2008 we have already raised almost £600 for the Guide Dogs. Thank you, thank you, thank you. The day of the show happens to fall on the anniversary of my aunt's death so it's all the more special for me that we try and get even more cash for the Sponsor a Puppy Appeal.'

'In closing, Mummy Dragon and I would like to thank any of our members who have helped run any of the shows this year. Also thank you to you lot for entering and for also coming back time and time again and for bringing 'new blood' with you, too. Thank you to all our judges, in particular Doc and Luke. You are both stars and we love you lots. Finally special thanks to anybody who has pitched in to get the job done on show days including Jules, Kirsty, Howard, Helen (Skipedoodah), Karen for doing the kitchen and for not killing anyone! Sorry if I missed anyone, I am bound to have done! Oh yes, and Merry Christmas and here’s to 2009.'

Agility Cross Over Scrapped

The Kennel Club General Committee has recently reviewed the Cross Over obstacle for agility competitions. The Committee noted that it had not been used in competition for many years and could be dangerous if suddenly re-introduced, as dogs and handlers would not know how it should be negotiated safely.

It has, therefore, been agreed that Regulation H(1)(B).3.p, which details the specifics of the obstacle, will be deleted with effect from 1 January 2009.

Supa Dogs Refunds

The Supa Dog show accounts for the this year have been completed. A copy is available for anyone to view once returned from the accountant.

The bad news is that it shows there is an overall deficit of nearly £1,200 which, at present, has been covered. Until everything was paid out and finalised, however, the insurance company will not consider a claim so a new claim form has been re-submitted to see how much of the £10,000 can be recouped. This could not be done until the costs of the finals of the heats were held at Peterborough in October were in. Obviously anything that is attained will be offered as refunds.

Taking the decision to move venues next year will save some money on the costs so, in addition to any insurance money which is recovered, Supa Dogs intends to offer a discounted price to those who entered this year.

Linda Croxford said, ' We are not sure how much it will be at this time because, as a lot of you will know the price of running a show - especially one the size of Supa Dogs - does not come cheap. We have always endeavoured to provide the best to everyone including top class acts in the past. Next year we're not planning on having so much entertainment which will make savings, just in case anything like this - God forbid - happens again.'

If anyone requires any further information or a copy of the balance sheet, please email Linda on supadogs@petlodge.co.uk which, by the way, will be the new contact email for anything to do with the Supa Dog show/heats in the future.

Easter @ UKA News Update

The Easter @ UKA show has changed venues for 2009 - gone outside and got bigger.  It will take place on a lovely 35 acre field, just off the A46 Cheltenham to Evesham road opposite the Beckford Inn. The field has been flattened and reseeded with a mixture of paddock and sports grass and is very well drained.

Once again the show is running over four days but this time there will be Agility, Jumping, Games and Steeplechase on Friday, Saturday and Monday so plenty of action for those Champ dogs that are hoping to gain a place in the IFCS 2010 team.

In honour of the fact that Sunday will include the first Heat of the 2009 www.dog-games.co.uk  Beginner’s Steeplechase Challenge, the day has bee designated a 'Steeplechase day' with Agility, Jumping and three Steeplechase classes.  So it will be five runs for those really competitive amongst us. All four days will also have the usual Nursery and Casual classes.

Entries open 17 November. The schedule is now on-line.

Otley 2-Day Show

Otley DTS are holding their first ever 2 day show on 13-14 June 2008. They say that they are hoping to get our schedule out sooner rather than later.

On behalf of the club, Pam Costello said, 'This is a big first for our club and  a big challenge for us. We are a very small club and will be relying on the good will of others to help at our show. All offers of help small or large will be gratefully accepted.'

'We spent many hours looking through the available show diary to ensure we didn't clash with any other weekend show in our area. We had hoped to have had it on the weekend we had our July day show last year, but for some reason all the shows like Thames, Wilton and Carn Brea have move forward a week...'

Laser Pairs Open to Beginners

This year for the first time the Laser Pairs heat to be held at Scrambles UKA will be open to Beginners and upwards. The dog must be able to maxi height.

Organiser Jenny Willis explained, 'As the Laser Pairs is a fun class, we do not want to get bogged down with rules. When the competition first started it was only held at KC shows and it was decided that it would be open to Large Grade 3 and upwards. Now that heats are being held at non-KC shows we are having to be more flexible. If a person only does UKA shows - and could be at champ level there - it would be unfair to bar them from entering a heat at the UKA show just because they do not compete at Kennel Club shows and, therefore, are not Grade 3.'

KC Clubs Wanted to Host Crufts Flyball

Dave Ray is looking for a couple of clubs to take on KC Flyball qualifiers in 2009 for the Crufts 2010 final. The heats next year are going to be somewhat different. The KC have decided to move to a flat fronted BFA style box and any clubs who take on the heats will have to provide the boxes, hurdles and all associated equipment to run the qualifiers.

Dave said, 'I would stress that this is for 2009 heats and onwards that this is going to be implemented. The final which is to be held at Crufts 2009 will be on the traditional Crufts style box and that will be the last time it will be used in a KC competition. Preference will be given to clubs Midlands to South to try and keep a balance in the location of the heats.'

Any clubs which are interested should contact myself at d ray ped@aol.com (remove the spaces.

IMCA & PAWC Reminder

For anyone wanted to represent their country - and have a lot of fun competing outside the UK - Richard Partridge has sent in this timely message.

'Now that the winter has cast it's shadow and all of the shops are reminding us that the season of jollity and gluttony is upon us we are reminded that our training is usually cold and the shows are few and far between. However, there is reason to think of warmer times. If you are considering taking your dogs abroad next summer, now is the time to see your vet and start the process which will lead to you being the proud owner of a 'passported' dog. Few realise until it is too late that it takes around seven months from the time of the first jab to the day you can bring the dog back to UK, so if you were planning to visit Tante Marie and Uncle Gaston in the Dordogne with you dog at Easter it is already too late.'

'I will be coming among you in the New Year to encourage you to join us in Hungary at IMCA & PAWC. It would be a pity if you could not make it for the lack of this essential document .'
